Dealing with Major Disasters

🌍 In the face of disasters like the recent Los Angeles wildfires, how do we help students process these events and find hope?

As educators, we know that disasters—whether natural or man-made—can leave a lasting impact on our students. But what if we could turn these challenges into opportunities for growth, empathy, and community building?

That’s why I have a Community Resilience Unit, a comprehensive resource designed to help middle school students explore the power of resilience, kindness, and collaboration in the face of adversity.

This unit focuses on the positive outcomes of challenging events, showing students how communities can grow stronger by working together. 

Through engaging activities, real-world examples, and thought-provoking discussions, students:
✅ Learn about local heroes and their contributions.
✅ Map community resources and identify safe meeting points.
✅ Create kindness diaries to document acts of community support.
✅ Design solution webs to tackle real-world challenges.

Why this unit matters:

  • It helps, in some way, students process disasters in a constructive, hopeful way.

  • It builds essential skills like problem-solving, collaboration, and empathy.

  • It empowers students to take action and make a difference in their own communities.

I created this unit because I believe that education is not just about academics—it’s about preparing students to face the world with resilience and compassion.
